Australian Electricity Market Rates Reviewed in 2026

Reviewed April 2026, using official 2025-26 benchmark determinations and Bill Zap provider data.

Compare current electricity benchmarks from major Australian energy providers, then upload your actual bill for a more accurate postcode, network and tariff-aware household comparison.

Important: Market rates can be misleading and may not reflect your actual costs. For accurate analysis, upload your actual bill to get comparisons based on your real usage, postcode, network and tariff setup — plus what people actually pay, not just marketing rates.

Researching rates? These benchmarks are a starting point. For your actual comparison, upload your bill.

Current Market Electricity Rates by Provider

Use these benchmark references and provider snapshots as a research starting point, then check your own bill for the real answer Bill Zap can extract from your actual charges.

Use this page to compare electricity rates in Australia across major retailers, including usage charges, daily supply charges, and tariff types. Market rates are useful for research, but they do not capture your exact bill usage pattern, controlled load setup, solar export credits, demand pricing, or postcode-specific network charges.

If you want the most accurate answer to whether you are overpaying, upload your own power bill so Bill Zap can compare your real usage against available plans and anonymous community bill data. Direct personal details are stripped automatically before comparison.

Important context: the safest public benchmark data to rely on is the official 2025-26 Default Market Offer framework for NSW, south-east Queensland and South Australia, plus the 2025-26 Victorian Default Offer. Public retailer offers can vary by distribution area, meter type, discounts, direct debit settings, solar setup, and whether a plan is still open to new customers.

If you are moving from benchmark research into decision mode, compare your assumptions in the electricity bill estimator, inspect live household outcomes in community rates and the tariff leaderboard, then upload your actual bill for the most useful answer.

AER Default Market Offer

The DMO remains the main standing-offer benchmark for NSW, south-east Queensland and South Australia from 1 July 2025.

  • Useful as a baseline, not usually the cheapest market plan
  • Public guidance indicated residential standing offers changed by roughly 0.5% to 9.7% depending on region and usage profile
  • Best used to sanity-check whether an advertised market offer is meaningfully better

Victorian Default Offer

The VDO applies from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026 and changes by distribution zone.

  • CitiPower flat example: $1.2407/day and $0.2733/kWh
  • Jemena flat example: $1.2301/day and $0.2972/kWh
  • Powercor flat example: $1.3684/day and $0.3009/kWh
  • United Energy flat example: $1.1648/day and $0.2884/kWh

Time-of-use matters

Published benchmark rates also vary by tariff structure, not just retailer name.

  • CitiPower two-period example: peak $0.3633/kWh, off-peak $0.2206/kWh
  • Powercor two-period example: peak $0.4040/kWh, off-peak $0.2365/kWh
  • United Energy two-period example: peak $0.3837/kWh, off-peak $0.2299/kWh
Rate disclaimer: the provider figures below are based on Bill Zap's stored market data and publicly available benchmark references reviewed in April 2026. They should be treated as indicative only. Retailers often have different internal rates by network, postcode, meter, tariff structure, discounts, and eligibility rules, so the numbers on this page may not match the exact rates available to your household today.
